Blog

This week’s Kutuby Learning blog discusses how you can spend the holidays with your loved ones and things to do this Christmas with your Muslim family.

With Christmas right around the block, celebrations across the world are at a high. However, as Muslims we do not celebrate Christmas (or any other religious holiday) as it goes against our beliefs. So what do we do during the holidays? Worry not, we have got you covered! The Kutuby Learning Team brings 8 fun activities that you can do this winter with your Muslim family.

Organise a Mosque Gala

Generally, you can find plenty of mosques organising fun events and get-togethers for families during the winter break. This can be a perfect opportunity for your family to join in on the local festivities. It is usually a community gathering where people get food, kids play around, get their faces painted, there are stockists selling Islamic themed books and games, and the whole vibe is really upbeat and celebratory. These galas are held in place of Christmas, so your children won’t feel left out of any fun during the holidays.

Take part in Charity Drives

Sadaqah holds a high value in Islam. Charity has always been encouraged and it is not limited to a particular month or time of the year . During Christmas, there are several charities and food drives that you and your children can participate in. Doing charity work will help make your child’s holiday special and memorable. Gather mittens, gloves, jackets, scarves and canned goods, etc. for a local charity. Encourage them to buy toys from their savings that they can give as a gift to their friends. This way, they can enjoy the spirit of Christmas without taking part in any rituals. Sadaqah a day keeps the ego at bay. Remember, this also includes pouring a glass of water for someone, or even smiling at people!

Go on a Trip

While the two week break may not seem very long, it is the perfect duration to plan a trip. Pack your bags, grab the kids, and head out on a coastline adventure. Hit all the local hotspots, museums, historical buildings, and the best Halal food options. Some people prefer to go visit their relatives and friends to catch up. Immigrants who can afford it often visit their home country, resulting in a wonderfully rich, cultural experience.

Perform Fasting

Christmas arrives in the midst of chilly winds, with everything covered in snow. This also means that the days will be shorter which makes it an excellent opportunity to fast. This is the perfect time to make up for the fasts that were missed in Ramadan. It also becomes an excellent opportunity to get your kids used to fast. It will be less harsh on them as compared to fasting during the  summer. It is an excellent way to strengthen your Islamic values. Speaking of that, we recommend reading our blog on Strengthen Islamic Values in Your Family with 6 Simple Steps.

Read the Stories of the Companions

The companions, or  Sahaba spent their entire lives in the service of Islam. There are tons of stories of the companions which are extremely interesting and captivating for young listeners. Kutuby Learning posts one short story monthly on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Make sure to visit and follow us so that you don’t miss out on any short stories.

Learn to Bake Something

Let’s be honest here. Who doesn’t love cakes and cookies? Everyone enjoys a good hot cup of joe with some freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Children love to dunk them in milk. Baking on a Christmas holiday is totally fine as we do it for and with the people we love!  One of the best things you can do is bake some cookies and send them over to friends and family. Or, if you haven’t already, what better time to learn then? Sending over food on a holiday to friends and family is a goodwill gesture. Well then, let’s get baking!

Host an Islamic Paint Party

This can be done both as an adult competition as well as a children’s activity. Everyone has an artist inside them. Why not hone your skills this holiday while socialising with your family and friends? Calligraphy has been quite a notable art prominent among many Muslim artists. This might just be your chance to get started with your passion as a calligrapher and an artist. Arrange a calligraphy paint party or a small competition among your close ones not for the sake of competition, rather as a way to connect and strengthen your social circle.

These were some of the things that our Muslim brothers and sisters told us about what they do on Christmas holidays. Let us know if you have any more ideas that you would like to share with us. We are always open for suggestions. Happy holidays! See you next week InshAllah.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
